Living in South Carolina, there are plenty of opportunities to get out and explore a new location. Last weekend, a good friend and I, along with our dogs, jumped in the car and took a short trip to the Old Sheldon Ruins. Located in northern Beaufort County, these ruins are of Prince William's Parish Church built circa 1751-57. Partially burned during the American Revolution and again burned by Sherman during the Civil War, the ruins are often referred to as Sheldon after Lt. Governor William Bull's plantation.
The beauty of this location, with the old exposed brick, hanging moss, and haunting tombstones encourages visitors' imaginations of early American life and wonderment about paranormal activity. According to legend, visitors have reported images of a woman, believed to be Anna Bull Heyward, standing in mourning over the grave of a baby. While Anna is buried there, we did not see nor experience any ghostly spirits.
Only a few hours from Columbia, SC, the Old Sheldon Ruins was worth the drive! Whether you believe in ghosts or not, the beauty of this historic location will forever remain etched in your minds.
